U.S. Postal Service Selects MITEM
for Strategic Integration Initiative
MitemView Applications Provide
Leading Technology and Enhanced Business Value to Streamline Inter-facility
Payroll Operations
MENLO
PARK, Calif., - March 26, 2002 - The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) selected
MITEM Corporation to modernize business processes via application integration
for its payroll operations. This action is part of an on going strategic
technology initiative by the USPS to incorporate emerging technologies
that improve the availability and value of its services.
MITEM developed two key applications used in USPS' payroll processing
operations that were designed to renovate older technology and streamline
business processes. The applications were developed in compliance with
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. These federal guidelines provide
direction for the universal accessibility of computer applications that
allow people with disabilities to have equal access to information.
MITEM is a leading provider of legacy integration software and e-Business
solutions for companies in the public and private sector.
MITEM was initially selected to replace older screen scraping technology
that was used by the USPS in its Involuntary Deduction Unit (IDU) that
is a part of payroll processing. A new application was needed to replace
one used by 25 specialized accounting technicians to process involuntary
deductions such as tax levies, garnishments, child support orders, court
orders, etc.
The older screen-scraping product used by IDU to access mainframe data
was stretched to the limit and could not accommodate the usability features
the USPS needed to provide. MITEM developed a new GUI in Visual Basic
implementing MitemView for direct legacy integration with the host,
an Amdahl mainframe OS/390 environment. In addition, MitemView added
advanced usability features to enhance USPS business processes, such
as a cleaner, more intuitive user interface and better edit checks.
This new application developed by MITEM Professional Services Group
created a true Windows GUI that taps into the mainframe and opens up
many more possibilities for future enhancement. The IDU application
has been live since mid October 2001 and USPS users report significant
gains in processing speed.
The USPS will go live in April 2002 with a second MitemView application.
For this project MITEM PSG developed a Web application to handle USPS'
payroll adjustment processing. Using the traditional method thousands
of USPS supervisors and administrators were required to manually fill
out a form that would then be processed through several steps before
being keyed into the mainframe for processing. The Payroll Department
handles 20,000 to 30,000 payroll adjustment requests per pay period
or, every two weeks.
With MITEM's Web-based application, supervisors can fill out the complex
forms in a secure browser, submit them, and maintain a feedback loop
with the processing department to ensure timeliness and accuracy. This
application greatly diminishes the need for extensive manpower to manually
process adjustment forms every two weeks. USPS expects a tremendous
cost savings as well as increased efficiency in the payroll adjustment
process.
